What are you trying to hide?
Are you painting because you need a change or to hide some structural damage? Will you be doing this just for fun or do you want it to last a long period of time? This all matters because there are paint colors that have better coverage than others. There are different types of paint that are more durable than others as well. Once you have decided on the why of your task, then you can pick the appropriate color.
Will this be exterior or interior?
Most people do not pick the same colors for the exterior that they use for the interior. Because of the elements outside you would want to pick a paint color that is durable as well as able to reflect the natural elements of your environment. If you live in the desert and you want your house to appear bright and clean, you would not paint the exterior white.
Do a sample test
When searching for the perfect color for a room, paint some swatches on your wall of different colors that you are considering to see how it looks and how the light reflects it. Take the time to see if you will like it in daylight as well as night time, because you will be living with this color for a while.
Create an illusion
Do you want your room to appear bigger or smaller? Warm dark colors will make your room seem cozy and smaller. If intimacy is what you are going for these are the colors for you. Vertical lines and light colors will make your room seem bigger. Painting the ceiling the same color as the walls also will give your room the illusion of being bigger as well. There are many tricks that will give your room the look you want.
All the trimmings
Don’t forget the trim. Once you find a dominate color for your room, try using a contrasting color to make special focal points pop out, such as your crown molding, fireplace, or windows. There is so much you can do with a can of paint and even the ceiling is a great place to experiment on. Try something different and have fun designing.
